Ngorongoro Crater

Ngorongoro Crater is the world's largest inactive, unbroken volcanic caldera, its steep walls enclosing a self-contained ecosystem of grassland, swamp, and forest 600 metres below the rim. Wildlife rarely leaves the crater floor, making game viewing here exceptionally reliable.

It is one of the few places in Tanzania where sightings of the endangered black rhino are still possible, alongside dense populations of lion, elephant, and flamingo-lined soda lakes. The surrounding highlands are also home to Maasai communities who still graze cattle within the wider conservation area.
