Southern & Western Tanzania
Mahale Mountains

Reachable only by light aircraft and boat, Mahale Mountains National Park protects a forested range that plunges straight into the clear waters of Lake Tanganyika, the world's longest freshwater lake. It is one of the last strongholds of wild chimpanzees in East Africa.

Days here combine guided forest treks in search of habituated chimpanzee communities with time on white-sand lake beaches, an unusual and rewarding pairing found almost nowhere else on the continent.
